Understanding Wayag Island
Wayag Island is an uninhabited group of hundreds of small karst islands situated at the northern tip of Raja Ampat, within Indonesia’s Southwest Papua province. This area spans approximately 155,000 hectares.
Geographical Context
The journey to Wayag from Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat, is substantial. A round trip covers over 300 km (approximately 200 miles), typically requiring a full-day boat tour lasting 6–8 hours. This journey necessitates the use of two-engine speedboats.
Historical Visitor Information (Pre-Closure)
Before the current closure, visitors to Wayag Island were required to obtain a Raja Ampat annual visitor pass. This pass cost IDR 1,000,000 (approximately $65 USD) for international visitors and IDR 250,000 (approximately $16 USD) for Indonesian citizens.
